Van Nature, a seasoned growers association, was looking to meet high customer demand for tomatoes in winter. Its supplier, Jami VOF, is run by three entrepreneurs who are always on the lookout for innovative ways to improve growth. Could light provide both groups with the solution?

The challenge
Jami VOF was looking for ways to expand production, both by extending its cultivated area inside or outside the Dutch borders or by increasing production on the existing 60,000 m2 of cultivated area. The entrepreneurs were not yet using additional lighting here. So there was scope for achieving benefits.
The right lighting
Increasing production would require a smart solution. For the longer winter season, Jami needed to be able to control the light levels and temperature in the 60,000 m2 greenhouse. LED makes it possible to achieve this, due to its flexible control and light absorption rate, which is 1.46 times more efficient than traditional HID lighting.
After consulting with Philips, Van Nature and Jami conducted trials in the latter’s Improvement Center. They found that a hybrid solution of GreenPower LED modules and conventional HID fixtures could provide the light needed for optimal growth, and sustain the heat levels needed during the winter months.
The trails were a complete success, and by working together, the teams found the perfect recipe for greenhouse lighting. In addition, the gas consumption in the greenhouse has been decreased, and the low energy consumption of the hybrid system is aiding environmental goals, while reducing costs.
The hybrid system increases production and also makes for a more consistent production. And it means that production is at the lowest possible cost per unit of product.
